Which power supply from my short list?

Post by plexman » Tue Dec 08, 2015 1:09 pm

Hi All,

I’m currently trying to pick a modular power supply for my silent build. Not really sure if it’s better to go fanned, semi-fanless or fanless.

Is it possible for a highly efficient semi-fanless / fanless power supply to have lower temperatures and produce less heat than an average fanned power supply? e.g. the seasonic / supernova p2 vs the bequiet straight power 10?

I’m only running a i7-6700 along with a GTX 960 but picked some of below options due to the fans staying off at lowers loads.

Here is my short list along with prices here in the UK for reference.
EVGA Supernova G2 750w £79
EVGA Supernova P2 650w £93
BeQuiet Straight Power 10 CM 600w £79
BeQuiet Straight Power 10 CM 500w £75
Seasonic 400FL 400W Platinum £89
Seasonic 460FL 460W Platinum £95
Corsair RM550X 550W £67 (not sure if this would be silent at my loads)
Enermax Platimax 500W £75

Max budget is £100 but the less I spend the better really. Would have been nice if there was something around the £50 mark that was modular :D

I know there is also the SuperFlower Golden Silent 500W but that's above budget.

Any other options or advice would be much appreciated.

Welcome to SPCR.

Your PC's stressed load is less than 240W. Call it ~200W with a high intensity game. The waste heat differences between these supplies at 200W is pretty minimal..a couple of percent equals 4W.

The best low priced SPU is the be quiet! 500CM. Always on fan that you probably won't hear at idle/2D over the CPU cooler and case fans and certainly won't hear when the gfx card's fans spin.

Hi Steve, thank you for your very swift reply.

I did also have the be quiet! 500CM as one of my top pick from my list.

Do you have any idea if running the EVGA Supernova G2 750w in eco mode / fan less would cause my overall system temps to be much higher than the bequiet? For £4 more it seems like I would be getting a better quality power supply.

There ya go.

You really don't have to worry about PSU heat affecting over all temps much, fanless or not, unless your ambient temps are way above the usual or if the case has no airflow.

I'd go with RMx. Best both in quality and price per value. For that load you don't really need platinum efficiency and SF units are only covered with 5y warranty.
