good god! LG 4163B is loud as hell! + ATA66 question

makes a loud popping sound when it opens

anyone else get this?

EDIT: also, it's been a while so forgive me for asking, I noticed the drive appears upon startup as running only ATA66. i could have sworn the same drive in other mobo either didn't state this or it ran at ATA100

can someone refresh me if all optical drives 'top out' at ATA66?

There's no reason for it to have an ATA100 interface. Heck, 7200RPM hard drives are just now breaking the 66 MB/s limit for non-cache transfers. DVDs currently max out around 21MB/s (CDs are considerably slower). The Blu-Ray folks advertise their medium as giving a maximum transfer rate of 54MB/s, so it's possible that a couple years down the line there will be Blu-Ray drives which can gain measurable benefits from interfaces with a faster transfer rate than ATA/66.

doubly odd:

1604N = detects as ATA133 hd device

1614N = detects as ATA100 device
