[Mounting] drives into 5.25"
Whats the best hardmount method to install 4 HDDs into 4 5.25" space for minimum noise and costs?
Softmounting such as spending with bungee cord is not an option. I prefer to have it screwed onto something with grommets.

well if you insist on using 3.5" drives, and you want them to be quiet without suspending them, then you only have one option left. Enclose them in an HD enclosure of your choice. Scythe makes the Silent Drive. Theres a few others around. You wont be able to use anything faster than a 7200rpm drive in them though.
Yeah and those HDD-silencers cost an arm and leg! I need a "cheapish" solution
I need to add in 4 more HDD into the 5.25".
I'm leaning towards http://www.pctoys.com/840556033615.html. The sides that screw onto the case seem to have rubber. If that helps decoupling, if not i'll use grommets.
Another thing I forgot to mention is, this is going into a fully sound dampered case. So a little airborne noise is heavily damped.

I had a clone of this. It does something, but not much, about seek noise and vibration.
I always just factor in the price of an HD enclosure whenever i look at buying a 3.5" drive, which BTW i dont ever use anymore. 4 HD's arnt cheep either, you could buy 3 HD's and 3 HD enclosures instead for about the same price.LBadvance wrote:Yeah and those HDD-silencers cost an arm and leg! Once the vibrations have gotten into the chassis, no amount of dampening is going to eliviate it.
You're going to have to give on something. Either live with the noise, get less HD's, or pay extra for enclosures.
6point elastic suspension works great, even for transporting computers. If your computer gets accidentally dropped, it will stand a better chance of surviving in elastic then hard mounted.fjf wrote:Get a samsung 501lj (the 500 GB one) and suspend it in a 3.5'' bay with some elastic tie; if it is too warm just cool it with a silent fan undervolted to 5V. There is no need for anything else. Money well spent.
