Samsungs: NIDEC better than JVC but what about FDB?

Post by Lone Ranger » Sat Sep 04, 2004 4:17 pm

Hi guys I have been away and I see lots of detailed posts of personal experiences with Samsung drives.

From what I gather, the NIDEC motors ae quiter than the JVC motors.

Bit someone posted about FDB too. I thought all Samsung 160 GB drives (PATA, SATA, 2MB, 8MB) used FBD.

Q.1 Do some 160 GB Samsungs not use FDB?

Q.2 Was lack of FDB seen as a factor contributing to a noiser Samsung hard drive?

Thanks for the info.

In general, NIDEC motors are A-okay (IIRC, some have had bad experiences; check that long SpinPoint thread). The best word to describe JVC motors is probably "inconsistent", as plenty of members have reported success with them, but the majority of them have negative results. What I'm getting at is if you get a JVC, you aren't necessarily doomed right away, just likely to be. :? As for the FDB question, I think all Samsungs have FDB motors, just some aren't labelled as such (but who knows). My thought is that the noisy Samsungs might be the victims of manufacturing errors (bad part, too much/little of something, etc.). Anyway, I wish you luck on your decision and hope you get a good drive!
