This is the monuting "unit". An elasctic rope, which is a silicon-rubber like inside, and some silk-like outside.

Unfortunatelly, I coluld not find pure rubber rope. I have large rubbers, so maybe I will try the other rack with those...

The bend of the sides is necessary, else the rack wouldn't fit in the 5.25" place... This is why the ropes are not simmetrical, becaus I had to modify them after installation, to be tight enough.

The drive sits firmly in place, and it is not in contact with the metal parts.

The cage mounted inside. There is absolutely no vibration even if I touch the cd-rom cage, in which the mounted drive is in...

However, after some (several hours use) the HDD gets a little hot, 46 C.
Before, in the 3.5" place it was 40 C after use, with a 1000 RPM 8cms Sharkoon fan installed in front.

And so far the case is open, so the 46 C will maybe bit higher if I put the sides and the front of the case back...

Unfortunatelly, I cannot place the drive cage even by one "storey" below, because the long old cd-cage interferes with the motherboard... I do not have an opportunity to cut the old cd-case yet...

Should I install a fan?

OK... I can say this project is falied...

Although the HDD-s were almost inaudiable, they got hot. Very hot.

I managed to put the two in the bottom 5.25" and above, one space between the other. I thougt, some breeze from the back 12cm fan would reach them this way. (I do not have a CPU fan, that ventilates the air for the back, yet!)

The hotter HDD reached 56C! The other around 46.
The lower was the cooler, it even heated the other above...

Now I have put both HDD-s back. They are in the upper and the middle space, close to each other. I have put a special sponge underneath the lower one, like the dampening sponges.

Great! This is the kind of DIY stuff that's inspiring -- simple, clever, effective & cheap. It is engineering at its humble best.

You could enhance it by cutting a slot on one end for the data cables.

After having too hot HDD-s mounted in the upper 5.25" bays, I am not really want to put the drives there from the above 3.5" bays.

But there, they are louder.

Now, I am not sure if I bought a Zalman, Nexus, Noiseblocker X-Swing, etc. mounting stuff it would be cool enough there. (let's just say, I do not care for the sound...)

Using a 5 drive capacity cage from an Acousitcase C6607. (The same guts seem to be in several other cases, including an Antec one.)



Materials are the drive cage, a bit over 1m of round rubber strip and four cable ties. I got the strip from a local rubber goods store (Para Rubber, for those in New Zealand), cost I think $3.80/m. I got 1 m, thinking I'd have lots to spare, but it turned out to be barely enough - and the shop attendant was generous in their measuring, so I recommend more than 1m. The strip is cut into two and turned into two loops, joined with the cable ties.

Advantages:
Tidy
Effective
Cheap
Keeps drive by front air-inlet
Could be adapted for two drives. (An earlier post in this thread shows a very similar mounting in a 4 drive cage, with 2 drives bolted with a gap between them.)

Disadvantages:
In most cases, you can't mount more than two drives like this.
Not all cases have a suitable cage.

I've got my new HDD mount installed...

The HDD itself is cooler than it was with the previous version... Although it is not really "cool", but hot. 48C is the highest, it goes no further...



I thought, that that the air suction from the CPU fan is enough... It gives some cooling, but not enough, I think...

Looks good. You can also increase cooling by replacing the bay cover with a suitable piece of scouring pad. (the meshed, flat wafer kind) Your case fan should take care of the rest. Air will enter through the path of least resistance. Doubles as a dust filter too.

Hope that's anti-static carpet there Raise the drive up a notch and you won't need it.

Had a thought Charles. The tabs holding the drive rails have holes underneath. If you could get two strands of bungy (thinner?) through each and tie them off on the outside of the cage, you wouldn't need the rails (or carpet) at all

Yes, maybe the picture is a bit misleading! The HDD is not even near the carpet!

I don't think it is anti-static... It is for only seek-noise dampening...

It's also a 'heavy breather'. Obviously the airflow has to be directed over the HDD somehow. The options would be to tape off the existing upper bay covers (sort of defeats the purpose of the case) or rig up a fan. The NoVibes had a solution for that I believe.

Guess the air is supposed to hit the bottom and go up the sides. Maybe a fan suspension is in order.. from the top instead ?

CM Stacker had that 120mm fan slash HDD cage. Takes room away from the suspension though.

Yes, I will never be satisfied....

The HDD is around 44 C with the CPU fan at 1650RPM (8V from the mobo) and the back 12cm Fan on. But it is noisy that way...

I did not want to give that amount of money for any suspension, so that is why I made one. So don't bother showing me the Silentvibes stuff.

Anyway I am thinking of a Hitachi 7tk250 HDD or maybe a Notebook Hdd.

How are you measuring the HDD? I've seen numerous posts with temps up there. My Samsung SP0802N ATA reports a SMART temp of 27-29C (fans lo/hi)

There won't be any original ideas coming from me. I'd rather take a mix of everyone else's and make it better

this is a sonata II, btw, in case you couldn't tell. Definitely helped a little... i think it actually did more for airflow/hdd temps than it did for reducing vibrations though. when my system is idle, hdd temps stay around 29c.

Were can i buy a pair of these in the us ?

They look like standard 3½ to 5¼ HDD adapters. You should be able to find them at any local computer shop. Haven't seen them in many of the 'box' stores though.

i decided to try suspending my hard drives and WOW they are so much more quieter!

it may look like they are touching the front of the case but they aren't. they are being suspended by thin wire which is very bendable, kind of like pipe cleaners. surprisely it holds very well so i'm satisfied

anyone know any programs to check the temperatures of my CPU, hard drive, and vid card?

also what temperature should these parts not exceed?

'SpeedFan' will do CPU and HDD (SMART) temps.. also fan adjustments and monitoring. 'Motherboard Monitor (MBM5)' is another useful tool. 'Dtemp' is a HDD (SMART) monitor. For vid card 'ATI Tool' is easy to use (temps and fan adjustments for ATI cards). Not sure about nVidia.

Quick net search will locate any one of them.
