slowing down a slimline dvd drive

I have a Toshiba slimline DVD drive which I think spins at 8x.
Is there a way of forcing this to spin at 1x and reducing the noise ?

I've been using DriveSpeed to slow both my DVD as well as my CDRW drive. It's from Ahead, and comes included in most versions of the Nero burning software. If you're already using Nero to burn CD's (and you should be, everything else pales in comparison) you've probably got it installed already and don't even know it. I know I did. I "discovered" it on my start menu after fussing unsuccessfully with CD Bremse.
It allows adjustment of both read speeds as well as spin down time.

I have tried DriveSpeed from Nero - doesnt seem to make any difference - I think maybe because it only seems to allow to slow the CD speed down.
When I put a CD in there it is much quieter but with a DVD it sounds the same.

I have now tried CD Bremse too but again can only change the CD speed.
The DVD speed list is disabled. This is definitely a DVD drive.
Any ideas anyone ?

It depends on the manufacturer of your drive. Some support speed adjustments, some don't. Check the web site of whoever made your DVD drive, there may be a firmware update you can run to add that feature.

why?? a cd-drive only spins when it is working, about 1% of the time. deal with a tiny bit of vibration and noise f/ that one mine a day it actually spins up.

I agree completely. The only time I use my CD drive is installing software. If there's a game you play that requires the CD to be in the drive just download a no-cd crack for it. Or if it's Audio, just rip it to your harddrive, its more convenient that was anyway.
But DVD's are another story. You pretty much have to have the drive spinning for that. Although you could rip a DVD to the harddrive, but that's a waste if its not a movie you want to watch over and over. Although I'm not sure about the performance of DVD playback if you slow the drive down too much. My drive will only slow to 15x, form the default of 16.
