Odd HDD Noises

Post by TheMuffinMan » Mon Feb 03, 2003 7:39 pm

My hard hrive started making strange noises around today when I got home. It's making a screeching noise, like a car jamming on the brakes. I'm going to assume it's bad at the moment. Has anyone else had this? Comments/Experiences?

Model:
Western Digital WD400 (40 GB)

Update (20 mins later...): It's getting worse. The noise went from faint to clearly audible in 20 minutes, which can't possibly be good

Update #2: My drive fitness thing dropped in the SMART menu from the last time I checked (about a week ago)

Back-up the data, back-up the data, back-up the data.

The END is near my friend, the end is very near.

That's a dying bearing, I'd almost put money on it.

Aack! That sucks. It's not even like I have 1000 CDs (or even 5) at the moment to back all my stuff up! Crap!

Wanna bet how much longer it lasts?

On the bright side, I can finally justify blowing the $$ on a Cuda IV 8)

Or, just unplug it and wait until your 'cuda arrives to fire it back up again.

I got $5 on it lasting 2 more days

Slight problem. This thing is the server for my website(s), and stays on 24/7:
akart.webhop.net and akgames.webhop.net

I backed up everything important. Kinda crossing my fingers at this point. :|

Why is it still doing OK in the SMART tests? It's not showing excessive errors or anything...

Just to be sure I win the bet I should fire up a script real quick to bombard your server!

I dunno why its not showing errors, sometimes mechanical problems just don't. I've seen that before.
