Samsung HDs - silentseek?

Post by Chris Ochre » Sun Apr 06, 2003 9:48 am

Anyone had any experience with Samsung's new drives, and how they compare to Barracudas? Seem quite good judging by the various reviews...

A review on a brand new 160G version is coming. The gist of it: what a little sweetie! Amazingly quiet, maybe better than Barracuda IV 1-platter.

Many people in the Tivo forums narrowed it down to the Samsungs and Seagate's for quietness. A lot of people (including myself) are running the Tivo's without the cover (for cooling) so it is important to get it as quiet as possible in the livingroom area.

Although I just put a Seagate Cuda IV in mine, I'm looking forward to the review and will also let the peeps in the tivo forum know too.

Thanks Mike, crg.

Great - can't wait for the review, Mike. I might have to hold off that second drive purchase until I read the review. I'm especially curious to hear how well 'Silentseek' performs, if it's markedly better than a barra.

Nice to see so many quiet components coming out! :D

I would be interested in a quiet 160gb model review. I'm hoping to decrease the number of harddrives running in the case.

What is the new Samsung 160 Gb drive?

Samsung's own web site is not very up-to-date as it only lists max 80 Gb drives:
http://www.samsung.com/Products/HardDiskDrive/index.htm

Also, according to the Storage Review site acoustic tests (not very thorough, I admit) the Samsung P40 series is even louder than Barracuda V series:

http://www.storagereview.com/articles/2 ... 0xB_6.html

Is this new mystery 160 Gb disk part of the SpinPoint V series (5400 rpm)?

regards,
Halcyon
