The quietest 3.5" INTERNAL drives (1TB)

Post by SileX » Wed Aug 29, 2007 9:13 am

TO THE ADMINS & MODS: perhaps this thread could be made sticky, as the "The quietest: 2.5" drives". Thanks.

We have now the largest 3.5-inch INTERNAL drives of 1TB (single drive). Which is the quieter and cooler? Any review comparing them out there?

Greetings,

I dunno about these specific drives, but if the number of platters and past record of quietness is any indicator, the Samsungs will be the ones to beat.

Although the WD Caviar GP will have one feature that's sure to be interesting - IntelliPower. It'll slow the drive down to 5400RPM when idle and speed it up to 7200RPM when in use.

It'll be interesting to see how the various "next gen" drives stack up. :)

Just anecdotally, I have to say I'm impressed with the Hitachi drives. I had a Samsung 500GB drive before and was very happy with it. Was worried about switching it out for the Hitachi, but have been very please.

I wasn't pleased at all with the Seagate drive.

BTW, this is all related to noise level, not performance.

Oops, sorry for the month delay in answering. This is the 1TB Hitachi and the 500GB Seagate.

I thinks it's common knowledge that Seagates have been noisy since the .10 series because of some problem with AAM licensing.

++

I could not believe how noisy my .10 was until I replaced it with a Samsung.

Seagates have supported AAM in the last few revs of their HD's as far as I am aware.

You've got it wrong - they're 5400RPM drives and that's it. They don't spin up to 7200RPM ever, it's just the marketing that makes you think that.

Right - there was a lot of confusion about that, and I'll admit - I had the wrong impression about that back then. (That was nearly 3 months ago... :P)

Will SPCR be doing this stacking in a review/update anytime soon?

That was the purpose of this thread in the first place:

storage review has some noise readings for the wd, the seagate and the hitachi...good for relative comparisons i find...

my WD 1TB is quieter (idle) than my old 500GB Samsungs and WDs which is a good sign...not too much in depth testing of it though...

Do you have som more info on that? Every store I have seen who states the speed says the top speed is 7200 rpm.

ok now have 8 WD 1TBs in my raid box...

seek noise seems slightly better than the 5000KS

i replaced a load of 400GB 7200.8 drives and the seek noise is waaaay better than that

idle noise beats anything i've heard (better than 501LJ 5000KS)

heat wise, previous drive temps were 45-50C for WD 500s and Seagates 39-40C for samsung.

current temps 37-42C (2 sets of 4 drives, the outher drives at 37 the inner ones at 42)

Here are them all:

http://www.pcgameshardware.de/?menu=bro ... w=original

Noise for idle/seek:

Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000: 0.6/1.2
Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31000340AS: 0.6/0.8
Samsung F1 HD103UJ: 0.3/0.5
WD Caviar GP WD10EACS: 0.2/0.5

The quietest ones are the Samsung and the WD (but that one is 5400 rpm all the time and much slower). It is NOT true that it changes 5400-7200 as originally claimed by Western Digital.

Best one overall? Samsung, hands down!

I seem to recall some review stating that the Samsung drive was also "blazingly fast".

The WD drives are very quiet and cool thanks to their 5400 RPM spindle speed. I bought a couple for my Tivos.
