If you can't hear the difference, go for higher performance. Decoupling will reduce any difference in seek down to a smidgen anyway.

In my opinion, idle noise is about the same. The seek noise difference is very obvious (7200.7 being a "notch or two" higher).

Dru is the author of a review that compared these drives and must be considered SPCR's authority on the matter. I bow to his greater knowledge in this area and refer folks to Dru's 2 Barracudas review article on the main site.

I never did get around to removing the SeaShield from the IV and putting it on the 7200.7. Do I think it has some effect on the seek noise? I would tend to believe so. I still want to try this out. I did post a later forum thread saying how I attached a Panaflo 80mm at 5V (or was it 7V?) to the NoVibes III which helped out on HD temps. The 7200.7 temps started matching the case temps. I believe it was around 35C.

Going back to the SeaShield, I think it would reduce the noise but probably not eliminate it? But then again, if it can match the IV's noise levels, it's worth doing. My 7200.7 drive is in my machine in California and my IV is still in Arizona. I will try to remember to remove the IV's SeaShield and pop it on my 7200.7. I won't be going to Arizona until this weekend, though.

I've been reading about this patent stuff with AAM. Maybe Seagate stopped putting on the SeaShield's because of this patent infringement deal?

Anyhow, I hope to have some info by mid-next week. Or perhaps, someone else on this forum might be able to try it out?

Which one of the 7200.7 single platter variants did you refer to?

According to the manual (cuda7200pm.pdf) of 7200.7 the 80 GB variant of the two single platter versions has higher sound power than the 40 GB for some reason.
I mailed Seagate and asked if this was correct and they said 'Yes' in like too short time to check the data correctly.

I'm thinking that idle noise is probably the same for 80 and 40 variants since there would be no logical reason why they would sound differently, that I can see anyway. Seek noise however could be more on the 80 variant because of one extra head.

And you dudes that have the possibility to check the SeaShield. Would be terrific with some detailed documentation about that. 1) If there are some obvious vibration contact points or some such. 2) If it affects only seek noise or idle noise too.
Then we will see if it could be possible to create a similar gadget oneself.

Drive underside only damping might be a way to go with 'high heat' drives such as the Cudas.

Although I suspect that a NoVibes or similar solution has the same effect as the SeaShield.. but it would be nice to have it verified.

the underside of mine certainly gets warmer than the top
i think its a cost/ pcb heat compnent issue myself

Well, some time ago you wanted to install the SeaShild on a Barracuda 7200.7 What was the resalt? Did it became notible quiter and comparative to your single-plate Barra IV?
