Barracude IV Drive Availability
I am having a difficult time finding Barracuda IV 40gb or 80gb Drives. I am wondering, are these drives discontinued? Newegg stopped carrying them last week, and the Seagate online store is out of stock as well.
I built my first system using an 80gb Western Digital with 8/mb cache. The thing was loud as heck, and ran hot. It finally conked out completely last week. I had the drive about a month before I installed it, and then it only lasted about 6 weeks. I was going to try the WD 40gb w 8/mb cache instead, thinking it might be quieter.
Then I found out about Seagate drives being very quiet. Are the Barracuda the best quiet drives out there? Is there a big difference between 40gb and 80gb, and where the heck can I find them?
Lots of people complaining about Western Digital drives being so unreliable, so maybe I'll go Seagate.

Seems that your 800JB was damaged in transit, as it lasted only six weeks.
Seagate has had the V line out over six months, so they should finally phase out the IV line. Seagate makes 7200.7 line too. Maybe the IV line has come to it's end. Too bad, as some (or most) say that IV is more quiet than V.
Cheers,
Jan

I bought a 40GB Cuda IV last week from PC Supply Source.

Yes, they are an excellent online retailer. I've been ordering from them for many years, and they always give outstanding service in every circumstance. Highly recommended, in the same category as siliconacoustics.com in my book.Empty17 wrote:I am wondering about Sharka.com
Are they a good online retailer? Anyone have any experience with them?

Fry's Electonics B&M have them in stock and on sale at least once/month. They own Outpost.com so you can probably find them in stock there as well.
Okay, my order came through and I got my Western Digital 40GB w/8mb Cache Drive. Installed it, and it's a little quieter than the 80gb, but it still is very hot to the touch. I RMA'd the 80GB Drive. I think I am going to get a Seagate Barracuda and use the WD's as back up drives. I don't have much confidence in the WD's anymore.
Thanks for all your retailer suggestions.

Dell is selling them. Here's the link as of 5-5-03 Dell-Home Users-Software&Peripherals-Drives&Storage-Desktop HDD-EIDE31-60GB I made the link following the path to the hard drive part of the Dell site in case the link expires.
They are sold under the Dell brand, but look at the pictures and you will see that they are Seagate IV's.
Keep an eye on Dells specials, if you can wait, they will usually roll around to 10% off peripherals and free shipping on orders over $49--or something close to that.

The Barracuda IV 40GB Retail Edition is back in stock at the Seagate Store. It's $89.00.
The link is http://www.certance.com/
Click on "Buy" at the top of the page, and then "Hard Drives" on the upper left of the page.
I can't decide wether to buy one or not. I sprung for a new WD 40GB w/8 mb cache just a week ago. I just got my WD 80GB w/8 mb cache back from WD RMA. I think it's a new one too, not a refurbished one. I want to sell it. So, what to spend $$$$ on next? A Barracuda IV, the Zalman Passive Heatsink, different fans, new PSU, etc...GGrrrrr, it's getting expensive, *lol*.
