New WD Velociraptor Enterprise + Consumer drives 150GB/300GB

Post by Tak » Thu Jul 24, 2008 2:30 am

Enterprise BLFS series
Press release
150GB WD1500BLFS
300GB WD3000BLFS

I know a lot of people have been waiting for a 150GB single platter version, me included. I hope that there will be an acoustic, power consumption and temperature improvement (however slight) over the double platter version.

No "heatsink" frame on these enterprise drives so no more warranty concerns over removal. Available at the end of the month. No pricing announced yet.

Consumer HLFS update
Consumer 3.5" versions with the "heatsink" are also being updated to the HLFS series (previously GLFS) which changes the location of the connectors to fit in a standard backplane like the new enterprise drives (according to a comment on Newegg). It appears that there will be a 150GB version of this drive:

WD1500HLFS
WD1500HLFS
WD1500HLFS 1-2 weeks

WD3000HLFS
WD3000HLFS 9/8/2008
WD3000HLFS
WD3000HLFS

I look forward to the SPCR review of one of the 150GB versions

Are these notebook/Scythe Quiet Drive compatible? I.e, 9.5mm high? Anyone know?

They're the same as the regular Velociraptor without the Icepack.
So, no.

I found an OEM evaluation version (presumably) of the WD1500BLFS on eBay.

Of course this gives no real indication of the release price but $200 sounds about right.

I'm looking forward to this drive for its 'quiet' and heat profiles.

I'm also looking forward to Nehalem in a few months, but don't think I'll uprgade to a new CPU until I find a quieter drive. My T1 is still the noisiest thing (during seek) in my setup. :(
