Removing metal cover from Seagate Barracuda for cooling

Post by larrymoencurly » Wed Jun 11, 2003 10:22 pm

I want to remove the metal cover over the circuit board of my Barracuda V to keep the electronics cooler, especially the chips for the motor and heads. But if I do this and ever need warranty service, will Seagate be able to tell if the cover was ever removed, even if I reinstall it before shipping it to them and put the screws back in their original positoins (each screw has a different number of dots on it)? Are there any internal or invisible seals that are broken when the metal cover is removed?

i believe no member of this forum intends to remove the seashield since it reduces noise. If you think your hdd is too hot, stick a heatsink on it.

jojo4u is right, the metal cover does reduce noise, but it also acts as a heatsink to cool the chips. Removing it will only make your drive warmer.

To cool the drive move it to place that has more airflow, or attach a heatsink the bottom of it.

didn't mike have a thing when he tried attaching sinks to hd's and he found that mounting them on the side works best?
