No telling how these values were determined, they say the drives are measured during Seek, which should be the loudest the drive gets (I think) It is a pretty long comparison list that makes me feel OK for ordering my SGate 7200.7s 8mb from NewEgg.

Just for the heck of it

That's an interesting list - would love to know where they got all the data.

On the one hand it reflects Seagate own docs (Product Manual) that the 40Gb 7200.7 is quieter than its bigger brothers, so they do seem to have put in some serious research (because some versions of the 7200.7 Data Sheets showed the 40 & 80Gb as quieter).

But on the other hand the Seagate Product manual has bel values to ISO 7779 (3.5 and 3.7 respectively), so where do 25 and 31 decibels come from :?

well, then again, I wouldn't be too certain that the data is very reliable -- it claims that the 7200.7 is quieter than the Cuda IV...and its also data provided by a vendor's website... :D

MGP,

Yeah, I know Vendor Website... Take all with a grain of salt, but...

Measuring all the drives at seek seemed something new from some of the decent sized list I have seen around, plus it is a pretty big list, hence "for the heck of it".

Pingu,

That would be a good sticky with the idle added. You have more ambition or free time than I must have at the moment. :)
