Which "side" of HD releases heat?

Post by BadReligionPR » Sat Jul 05, 2003 10:46 pm

Just wondering, as I've never seen anything mentioning it. What side of the hard drive is releasing heat? The metal side or the exposed underside?

Actually all of the sides release heat. I think the smart temp sensor is on the bottom of the drive, which seems to be the hottest side. Blow some air directly on the bottom and you'll see the smart temp drop quickly.

Heat sinks on the long sides of the drives are effective, but make mounting more difficult.

The sides should be hotter than the top or bottom. Try to touch the drive to see this.

yeah.. the sides get the hottest..

the temperature sensor is on the bottom of the drive because that's where all the electronics are, not because it's the hottest spot on the drive..

obviously if you blow some air on the temperature sensor the reported temps will drop, it doesn't neccessarily mean the drive is running much cooler though..

the bottom and sides is often made of the same bit of metal, often have a pattern on underside to increase surface area
