Hi,
I'm a step behind on the largest capacity hard drives that have 1, 2, and 3 platters -- can someone help me out, please? In other words, what are the largest capacity drives with just one platter, and with 2 platters, and with 3 platters? Are there 1TB drives with one platter, or 2TB drives with two? Are there 1.5TB drives with two platters? Which 2TB drives have the fewest platters? What are the largest capacity 3 platter drives?
Thanks in advance!

Lots of choice in 500G/platter drives (single-platter 500G, 1T with 2 platters).
So far as I know all 666G/platter drives with more than one head (very low capacity but in principle more reliable) have 3 or more platters.
Samsung annonuced 1T/platter drives. I don't know when they'll be available.
This kid keeps a useful (if not exhaustive) "database":

Okay, so they are "saving" all the 666GB/platter drives for the 2-3TB drives? And many 1TB drives are 2 platter?
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Yeah, this is my understanding. But maybe WD has more to offer than I know. They're not transparent. And I haven't bought 3.5'' drives lately. I'm not seeing any 1.3T drives on the market anyway.NeilBlanchard wrote:Okay, so they are "saving" all the 666GB/platter drives for the 2-3TB drives?
Only old ones should have more than 2 now. But you never know with WD. Samsungs is talking about bringing single-platter 1T 5400 rpm to the market but until then, yeah: if you want 1T or even 750G, you'll need two platters.NeilBlanchard wrote:And many 1TB drives are 2 platter?
