I'm looking for a super cheap and small capacity hard drive for an older system, and a used 40-60GB 2.5" 5400rpm SATA I drive seems ideal for this. Will pretty much any previous generation 5400rpm laptop drive I end up getting be considered quiet by SPCR standards, as long as it's soft mounted? Or is there any particular brand that a few years ago should be avoided? I have zero experience with 2.5" drives, so I'm not sure what to expect.

Thanks.

Yeah, I started there but the only recommended 2.5" hard drives are newer 500GB models. And on the linked article at the top Is the Silent PC Future 2.5-inches wide? the best rated 2.5" drives noise wise are 4200rpm. :?

Ok, I used the Internet Archive to see what the recommended 5400rpm drives were 4 years ago. This point in time seems to be a good place to start. :)

Will try and find one of those drives for sale.
