WD claims they're designed for environments where silence is essential, but I can't find any reviews that mention vibrations or acoustics.

Can any of you comment on them?

Haven't used one but in case you haven't seen the specs sheets, it does have a little bit of acoustic info on there:

http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/S ... 701250.pdf

vs. the regular, very popular non-AV models:

Acoustic ratings from WD appear to be the same (at least in the 2TB range, which was what I compared in the above sheets)... for what that's worth.

I've seen those, I'm not familiar with sones and they don't mention vibration at all.

I have a 500gb av-25 one. It is not very quiet. I think other 5400 rpm drives are better.

I don't think AV has anything to do with noise. Doesn't it mean that the drive is designed for continuous operation (no head parking or anything like that)?
