I'm looking to upgrade to quieter drives without breaking the bank. Capacity isn't an issue so much as price, cheaper is better for me.

I don't care about dimensions, spindle speed, number of platters, or SATA version. Just acoustics.

If you don't care about capacity, only about acoustics then get an SSD.

As a boot drive certainly, but I can't afford one large enough for applications.

Check Hitachi 5K500B, its on the SPCR recommend list, here is their review, More 500GB notebook drives: Seagate 7200.4 & Hitachi 5K500.B. If you can still get an SSD for OS/APPs.

The 250G 5K500.B is probably better than the one reviewed by SPCR. I've bought a bunch of these and I can recommend them. I've screwed them directly to the case without anything to dampen the vibrations and most people can't hear them anyway.

Hitachi claims its modern notebook drives have the same specs, these 160-320 GB models are single platter too.

Any other suggestions?
