I'm looking to upgrade my rig with 2 x 2TB hard drives, from 4 x 1TB hard drives, due to a lack of SATA ports.

The prior drives are 4 x Samsung Spinpoint F1s (HD103UJ). I have liked them quite a bit, and since they are 7200RPM drives yet have been quite quiet (at least for their time), it's sad to see them go. Here's how an older HD103UJ has been performing on my system:

What drives do you recommend? This will be in a RAID-0 setup, and of course, silence is golden. 8)

I have currently narrowed it down to the Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 and the Seagate Barracuda Green ST2000DL003. Both are ~5900RPM green drives. I'm open to other options, including 7200RPM drives (provided that they are at least as quiet as the HD103UJ).

I'd suggest the Samsung Spinpoint F4 2TB HD204UI

I have it in an external case and it's very quiet, perhaps quieter than the F1, i had that drive until it broke, i have no idea about it's performance
as i have it running through USB but it's been fine for me, runs at lower speed (5400rpm) and only has 3 platters.

I am sure that the HD204UI is a fine drive. That being said, I am looking for a drive that has better access times. Hence the ~5900 RPM drives that I mentioned.

the difference between 5400 and 5900 RPM drives is probably minimal.

7200RPM [and faster] will net you better access times.

Hitachi makes by far the cheapest 7200RPM drives. I'm using 5 7200RPM 7K2000 [the 32mb cache version] drives, I am pretty happy with the noise.

I'd speculate western digital black's may be quieter, but you pay a premium.
