With the amount of doobies I see you smoking in these forums, I'm not surprised.POLIST8 wrote:I'm still confused.
Samsung AFAIK. OT for the thread: Some similarity, but the spinpoints are actually a different shape than the old Fujitsu (4GB) drive that I have in front of me (digital camera in another location, so can't post a pic). The Fujitsu drive is much more rounded on one end. I guess it shouldn't surprise us that some drives look alike as there are only so many ways you can package the platters. WD and IBM both have the boxy look with similar designs on the top, too, but are not made by the same manufacturer.POLIST8 wrote:I remember old Fujitsu drives that looked almost the same as these drives...
Does Samsung or Fujitsu manufacture these?
No reason to believe otherwise. About Our Division - Hard Disk Drive. One manufacturing location worldwide.POLIST8 wrote:Just a cig I was smoking when in London this summer.
So Samsung DOES manufacture the drive?
Are you asking because you're not real hot on Fujitsu drives? Or some other reason?
I'm on the hunt for an 80GB SATA version of the samsung in the US. The PATA versions are finally showing up, I hope it won't be much longer for the SATAs to appear. I've got my antec 3700 case, which I'm in the process of modding for quietness, now I just need this hard drive to become available so I can order the rest of my components!
Yes, Samsung makes the drives themselves. Fujitsu hasn't made ATA drives for a few years. And yes, the Spinpoint 80 series is excellent. Samsung's reliability has always been great(plus no warranty nonsense, all have 3 year advanced replacement coverage), now finally they perform too. The SP80 is also quieter at idle and while seeking than my 7200.7.
And no, xbitlabs did not do this review.

I've got a 1604 (160GB, 2MB cache) and it's as quiet as my 80GB Barracuda IV's while idling and even quieter than the Barracudas while seeking. It's a very nice drive.cliche wrote:oo the 2 meg cache does well, I might get one of those instead
I can't wait to get an 80GB, 8MB cache version whenever they become available. They should be even quieter than the 120/160GB versons because they're inly one platter drives.

Fujitsu 3.5" drives used to be notorious for bad clusters/sectors...I've repaired machines with drives ranging from 1.xGB - 8GB and have seen this problem.
I'm sure they've fixed their problems by now, but one wonders why (aside from intense competition) they dropped out of the 3.5" market and only do 2.5"...
Good luck to Samsung to turn a profit in the HDD segment.

If you look at: http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/sam ... index.html and take into account the relative performance difference between the SP1604N and the SP1614c (http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/sam ... ndex2.html) I'd say performance is a bit better then the diamondmax plus 9.Radeonman wrote:This review is decent, but I'd love to see if compared to a bunch of other drives instead of just a spinpoint love fest.
Pretty amazing with those noiselevels.
