OCZ Octane: Indilinx is back!

Sounds like an interesting newcomer, with capacities up to 1TB and competitive performance is 3 and 6Gb models.With OCZ now owning Indilinx, I wonder if this could lead to a price war...

Like many, I've stopped caring about performance since the upper limit for a regular desktop user has already been reached. I only wish that the Octane series will drop prices on the overall SSD marked, and I most say: OCZ drive down prices with aggresive prices, while Indilinx made budget-to-mainstream (i.e. affordable) controllers. Hopefully, the new Octane SSD's may lower SSD-prices even further. Even mediocre SSD-performance will easily suffice in a normal desktop environment.
Reliability is, of course, also important.
I had sincerely hoped that Intel would bring great prices along great reliability with the 320-series (I know, the 8-MB fix, but Intel usually sell reliable SSD's). I knew well that performance was not earth-shattering, but with good price & reliability, I had been sold. For some reason a 120 GB Intel 320 cost nearly 30 USD more than a 120 GB OCZ Agility 3 here in Denmark! Not quite as mainstream as Intel has preached.

The thing is, NAND isn't cheap to manufacturer, it will take a long time for products like SSDs to become cheap. Either using a more efficient manufacturing process or switching to a different product alltogether.

The reviews seem quite positive, but so far only for the 512gb drive. As the 128 and 256gb varieties will almost certainly not perform as well I'll bet that the M4 will outclass Octane.

OCZ Technology has released their second branded SSD based on the Indilinx Everest platform. The OCZ Petrol SSD family features a SATA 6Gb/s interface and read speeds of up to 400 MB/s. The consumer appeal to the Petrol however is price, OCZ is offering the drives in 64GB to 512GB capacities with suggested pricing of $89.99 (64GB), $149.99 (128GB), $339.99 (256GB) and $649.99 (512GB).
