SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 1TB 2.5' - disappointing noisy clicking

Post by ex.treme » Sat Oct 29, 2011 1:40 am

Hi,

i bought this hard drive SAMSUNG Spinpoint M8 HN-M101MBB 1TB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive. But disappointed from noisy clicking. Samsung drives was always quiet without clicking, i never expected this noise issue. :-(
Looks and sounds like "heads parking" problem also known as "power cycle count". (WD hard drives)

In diagnostic tool HD Tune looks like another problem. Increasing value is "program fail count"
every one minute up 10. I tried close all programs, but its same.

Don't know if is normal situation, but its unpleasant and terrible sound :x

If anyone know how fix it, please let me know.

I have the same drive, and my "Program fail count" attribute is 0.

Head parking for Samsung laptop drives can be disabled in Linux with the hdparm command:

Code: Select all

hdparm -B 254 /dev/sdX
Replace X with the letter your drive has been assigned.

My previous 500 GB Samsung laptop drive required that this is re-run every time the computer is booted (drive power cycled), I'm not sure about this 1 TB model though.

It is possible to run hdparm in Windows, search the forums.

Cheers,

Jan
