Quiet, large external drives?

Post by drdaz » Tue Dec 25, 2012 11:45 am

Hi all

I'm looking for some external storage for my HTPC (2010 Mac Mini), and figured I'd ask around in here. I'm looking for a 3, preferably 4 TB drive.

I've got my eye on the WD My Book Essential 4 TB (WDBACW0040HBK), but I'd be interested to hear people's opinions. I'll be using it for storage of my media (not backup).

Does anybody have experience with that drive or others in its family?

Cheers

Just a thought, the 2010 Mini has Firewire 800 and USB 2. So, if you go with this WD, you'll be transfering files at the USB 2 rate.

I bought a MyBook 4Tb and i find it noisy, it does not come from the case since there are no fan, it's the HDD.

I would not recommend it if you are looking for a quiet HDD.

I'd recommend buying enclosure and hard-drive separately. At least you can poke around should something fail without voiding the warranty.
