any 3tb 9mm 2.5" HD

Post by dan » Tue Jul 18, 2017 6:18 am

seagate sells z-height 7mm 2tb 2.5" hard drives,
either 1 or 2 platter

there are several 3tb 2.5" notebook drives
but all are z-height 15mm,

presumably 3-platter or more

iirc ps4 only accepts z-height 9mm or less, so 15mm too thick
many laptops only accept 9mm

in name of quietness and compatibility

any 3tb z-height 9mm 2.5" HD either 1 or 2 platter

Only 2.5 3tb is from wd, and was 15mm.

Seagate seems to have skipped 3tb in 2.5, in favor of 4tb and 5tb, but again 15mm, not the standard 9mm.

That said if you have the means, you could get a Samsung 850evo 4tb, that's a 7mm.

ok thanks obviously 15mm is too big for ps4 and laptops

is the 2tb 7mm 1 platter or 2 platter?

is it better to buy 1 15mm 4tb-5tb or 2 2tb at 7mm z-height for sound and noise

What i used for my PS4 and laptop are the Seagate 2TB Expansion Portable USB 3.0 External Hard Drive, i just take them out of the enclosure, cheaper than the oem 2tb and have worked fine for three years, cant say they are silent, but they are very quiet (at least compared to the other hardware they are with).

Well i just recieved the 5tb external from Seagte, and while its still in the case and i have not tested a lot, just some file copies, it doesnt seem like a loud drive, but for sure its 15mm, weather it fits or not on your pc build its up to you, perosnally i dont think its worth it though, WD Reds are pretty solid, unless you have very limited space on the desktop build, but if thats the case i would go with 2tb linked above that its cheap and works pretty decently, im about to change my laptop from MSI GT70One to MSI GT73VR and i chose the same 2tb disk to use for storage, again its not silent, but for me its good enough.

thanks for sharing your experience

for me i want silent, anything but pure silence isn't good enough

as far as silence is concern, if that 2tb 7mm seagate is 1-platter i don't think you can beat 1 platter HD.

of course ssd are even quieter but a 2tb ssd is pretty expensive
