The new Arctic Cooling Freezer Extreme HSF good for AMD!

Post by Felger Carbon » Tue May 27, 2008 2:50 am

Uses the AC 120mm PWM fan, 1500RPM max. Total height only 131mm for a tower HSF with a 120mm fan! Like the Scythe Mine, it sandwiches the fan between two fin grids. Dimensions 100mm x 130mm x 131mm. Madshrimps review here, with links to the Arctic Cooling page. That page in turn links a ~900K PDF installation guide, which shows that this heat sink (wonder of wonders) will be pointed in the correct direction on 98% of AMD mobos!

The trick, for this HSF, is to remove the fan in the middle. That allows access to the AMD mount in the correct orientation. Tighten the screws and re-install the fan.

Well, that doesn't look like a review to me, just a re-presentation. At CES 2008 it was listed with 226 fins, link to thread:

What I find odd is the 800 rpm minimum for the fan. AFAIK the 120 mm AC PWM fans have a minimum rpm of 400. I'm repeating my previous statement :
The design seems OK to me, except the push-pins. I believe AC will take a loss on it until they provide a bolt-through kit.

Dont know if it's just me, but I cant find that PDF-thingy, which shows about mounting in the right direction - I guess you mean it points towards the rear on AMD boards?

Without seeing this in real life, I think the pictures looks a lot like the fins are too close to each other, and not being good for low airflow...

The A-C site has a link to a small PDF spec sheet. On the spec sheet's upper right, there's a photo that reveals some details of why the HSF is only 131mm high with a "120mm" fan.

It seems the 120mm fan has had its outer case removed. Such fans are often referred to as "110mm fans" even though the blades are exactly the same diameter as the ones in a usual 120mm fan.

The tradeoff here is, the fan is proprietary and you won't be able to easily (if at all) exchange it with other fans. For those who want to use it to cool a lower power CPU, an RPM range lower than 800-1500 may be desirable. This link explains a simple mod to lower the RPM range of a PWM fan.

Could not find the link on the AC page for the installation guide. Its well hidden if it's still there.

Go to my initial post. Click on the Madshrimps link. Scroll halfway down and click on the Arctic Cooling product page. Click on "Additional Information". Click on "Installation Instructions" and you will be asked to open or save the PDF file. Hokay?
