Ultra quiet XP-heatsink from Verax

Post by silentFreak » Sun Feb 09, 2003 10:40 am

Hi!

Did anyone already test the new heatsink from Verax for XPs? I saw it on the site of PCSilent and it seems that it is a really quiet solution for all XPs. It has a copper plate under a aluminum-heatsink. It seems that they´ve used high-tech (cold gas spraying) to bring a 0.2mm thin layer of copper under the heatsink to have a basis to solder a 3mm thick copper layer to it. Take a look the cooler:

You can get it at: http://www.pcsilent.de/en/index.asp

Anandtech reviewed one of these a while back (maybe an older model)...anything above a Duron was in uncomfortably high temp. territory (like 70+ C high).

You can't really see it on the pic above, but those Verax fans sure have an inovative/weird design. Has anyone any experiance with their case fans? By their specs they seem very quiet.

here's teh best pic I could find to demonstrate:

By the specs, they seem #*$%ing expensive!

The fans are $35 (on sale from $45 USD)

The link with the heatsinks in it - $86 and change for that heatsink.

Stupid me...it was Tom's Hardware that reviewed the thing:

It's performance is as good as a AX7 with Papst NGL but noise is much higher (more like a Papst NGML or a Vantex Stealth).

From what I understand about the various articles i read on those verax fans, they are good at moving a very low amount of air quietly but they arent really good at moving medium-high amounts of air, and when they do get up in rpm they are loud.

I bought the $35 "special" Verax out of curiousity.

It is really quiet, but has a kind of annoying high pitched noise from the fan motor itself. Probably won't be noticeable when used as a CPU fan, but probably would be annoying if several are used as case fans.

It has almost no air turbulence noise, but that's because it has very little airflow. About the same as the 1900 RPM Papst, but much quieter than the Papst.

It is interesting that the Verax is really lightweight, and has little to no vibrations when spinning.
