SI-97 on socket 939??

Post by OVI » Fri Dec 02, 2005 12:24 am

Is there any way to mount Thermalright SI-97 (NOT si-97a) on socket 939 cpus? Im thinking of upgrading my comp with a new mobo and cpu. Im planning to get an amd64 socket 939 cpu to replace my axp3000+ but I'd really like to continue using my existing si-97.

IIRC the difference between the SI-97 and SI-97A is an extra notch in the A version that allows a 754/939 bracket to fit. If you can get hold of one of these brackets then get some comparison pics and get filing. Or.. buy a new HS and sell the old one on eBay (or here) - the difference will probably be around what the bracket costs separately and you won't have to spend hours with a file :)

Thats exatly what I've been thinking. One solution I came up with was to get something like this http://www.oclabs.com/res/focus/1160/clipamd64.jpg to fit between the HS and the base. i think I'll get a boxed cpu and I work on this when i have the time.

yep, but that's a Socket A clip - I'm not sure the socket 754/ 939 work the same way (I have a Skt A processor).

I think thats a socket 939 clip (check image name) heres the page http://www.oclabs.it/pfocus.php?docid=1160 and i think I've seen others like it for socket 939.

The SI-97A got a hole in the base, which is necessary to use the Thermalright A64 clip.
But yeah, maybe you can find another clip that will fit, I dunno.

they may call it a AMD64 clip, but it looks identical to a Socket A clip. the AMD64 brackets are usually 4 point fittings onto a large square socket around the CPU socket (look at any 754 or 939 board) whereas the Skt A brackets are a pair of opposing 3 hole clips which hook onto hooks sticking out the side of the Skt A CPU socket. Considering that the retention clip on my Skt A HS looks exactly like the one in the picture and nothing like the clips on 754/939 HSs I'm fairly sure I'm right :)

Ok, I'm sitting here with a K8 retention bracket (which is not square!) and a K7 mobo.
K7 clip length: 64 mm
K8 clip length: 94 mm
Besides, the lugs on the K8 are wider apart, but there are three on each side, except for the one who locks the clip (K8 only), so the clip in the link above can be A64, since it uses a screw instead of a clip lock. Here's an A64 mobo, you see four lugs on each side, and the those in the corners are for the lock. The SI-97A uses the same clip as the HR-01 AFAIK with three holes on each side, see link.
