need to get quiet... Athlon XP 1800+, alpha PAL8045, antec
here's the deal-
i'm running:
athlon xp 1800+
Alpha PAL8045 HSF with the stock 80mm delta fan outputting 45 CFM
this fan is loud... i need to get the noise down a bit, but i don't know how much CFM i can sacrifice, or what route i should take in terms of getting the most quiet fan.
at the moment, i'm considering getting an adaptor to go from 80mm to 92mm, and then get a quieter fan on there that way. any other suggestions?
i'm also running the stock fans in the PSU that came with my antec SX1030B case, as well as the 2 fans on the back... i'm considering replacing those 3 with panaflos, but am looking for any other options.
thanks.

your motherboard might have come with cpu temp monitoring software.. i think speedfan also monitors cpu temps.
i have an..
slk-800.. some generic fan @ 7V (until my panaflos come in)
amd xp2600+
amds are said to take up to 80C.. my idle cpu temps havent gone over 45C and ive read some people passivley running their amds around 65C. im not sure how effecitve the alpha hs is, but i dont think you need to put on a 92mm... cause 80mms usually run quieter. i think your first step would be to monitor your temps so you can experiment with different voltages. then if youre not satisfied make the jump and buy some fans to play with.

If it's an AMD board, you can play around with Speedfan:

Word of advice: Watch the fan when you play with it, and make sure it's still spinning. Speedfan reports 0 RPM many times when the fan is still spinning...

changing the voltage is really inexpensive and imo brings the most noticable results. instead of cutting wires and whatnot you can get 3 to 4 pin adapters for like 50 cents and do this mod.

Is the fan blowing or sucking?
Hello:
The 8045 is an excellent HS -- to switch to the SLK-800 would be a very small improvement. Is the fan set up to blow down into the HS, or is it pulling air up through it? Alpha recommends the latter -- that aluminum shroud is to help the air flow enter the pins down low so the cool air hits the warmer part of the HS. Apparently, it performs about 5% better when the fan is sucking air through the HS.
Yeah, and undervolting the YS Tech, or putting a quieter fan on there and possibly undervolting that -- as long as your temps don't peak much past 60C, or certainly if you keep it under 50C under constant load; that's all you need. And if you could try undervolting the CPU -- it's quite likely that a later XP 1800+ is capable of running stabily at a lowered voltage, if your motherboard provides for it. This would help you run a lot cooler!

hmm.. yes. actually, i've tried the fan in both blow and suck... and believe it or not, it runs about 2 degrees C cooler when in blow mode. i just threw a 35 CFM fan on there to experiment with minimum airflows, and with a good load, my temps seem to have gone up about 4-5 deg C, up to about 42 C. definately within tolerances. that fan's a 30 dB antec, and it's relatively quiet, but i think i'd like to still stay around 35 CFM, but get below 25 dB. i found that the Papst 8412N/2GM does 23 dB and 36 CFM - just about what i want. anyone have any history with this fan, or any clue where i can get it for less than $35? thanks for the input. it's helpin a lot. this comp puts out a buttload of noise, but even swapping the fan as i did today already significantly dropped the noise. next to go is the PSU fan... probably the loudest in the case.
