What would be the fastest Athlon XP processor I could get and still use an SK-7 or SLK-800 and panaflo at 12 volts and 7 volts.

The case has minimal airflow. Basically only a panaflo in the PSU and no case fans. I could add a case fan if needed.

Also, I have an L1A in an Antec 300 watt PP303X PSU. Can I run that fan at 7 volts and the PSU still be cool enough. Also, should the fan be sucking air out of the PSU, or blowing into the PSU?

I know it's alot of questions, but your help is greatly appreciated.

I have a 1700+ with an SK-7/PC P&C Silencer at ~7v blowing down
43 C Processor, 34 C Case, ~25 C Ambient

Welcome Jonestown, I can't answer your 1st question, but I can tell you that having an exhaust fan will help you run the HS fan at a lower speed while keeping your CPU temps the same.


Does the pp303x have a thermal control fan circuit? What other components do you have. To be on the safe side, I'd say make sure you have a case fan before running the L1A @ 7V. To be even safer (and/or to allow for 5V operation) I'd duct in fresh cool air directly from the outside. See my duct as an example: http://forums.silentpcreview.com//viewtopic.php?t=2842

The original fan in the Antec psu was thermally controlled I believe. It was just to noisy for my taste. So, should the fan in the PSU be blowing into the PSU or outside?

The only other components in the case are:

Athlon XP 1600+ (stock speed with GC-68/Panaflo L1A)
Radeon 9000 Pro (noisy little fan, next on the list to quiet)
40GB Seagate Barracuda IV
256MB Crucial PC2100
TB Santa Cruz
DVD-ROM
CD-RW

CPU Temps are 43 degrees Celcius, Case is 28 degrees Celcius.

I'm asking about the thermalright heatsinks to check out the potential CPU upgrade options while still having a quiet/nearly silent system.

Jonestown, the fan on your 9000pro can be silenced very easily, just unplug it! The 9000pro runs cooler than you think! You could replace the fan with a passive heatsink just to be a little safer. I have a 9000pro myself and I epoxied a passive heatsink to it and its run fine now for well over a month including stress testing for 12 hours + on 3dmark 2001. It is important to note I have a 5v panaflo on a zalman bracked pointed at it, but Sapphire makes a 9000pro that is passive anyway.

As for the SK7 with L1A @ 7v, I'd guess on about 2400+ based on responses from this thread and assuming a maximum safe temp of ~65c. Remember the 1700+ runs at as low as 1.5v but the 2400+ will run at 1.65v. However I'd bet it would run fine undervolted to ~1.5v. My 1700+ JIUHB 0302 can run 1866mhz at default 1.6v (2300+). May I recommend that you just get a 2100+ AIUHB and choose the speed you want, they overclock very well. ~$95 at newegg.

I went ahead and got a SK-7 from SVC for $20. Didn't want to spring for a SLK-800.

I did finally unplug the Radeon 9000 Pro fan. I have a panaflo L1A pointed at it for the time being. I would eventually like to get a little heatsink for it just to be safe.

I was hoping the SK-7 would go up to around a 2400+ with a 7 volted panaflo. I would imagine with the panaflo at 12 volts I could get up to a 2600+ or maybe a little higher, but that's all for another day
