Which heatsink for mATX case with vertical p/s?

Post by alkan » Tue Apr 08, 2003 2:41 pm

Going for a mATX case with vertical/side mounted power supply. Currently have Zalman flower cooler which is logistically impossible to use in that configuration. Need a decent heatsink that I can mount an 80mm panaflo on top of that clears the power supply (i.e. low-profile). Or am I worrying for nothing?

Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I'm using a Palo Alto PA-450 which has that configuration (~60mm TOTAL height, which means I need a fan & cooler shorter than 50mm). Here are the coolers (all of them for AMD Socket A) that I have used that work well. Those marked with a * should use a lower profile fan.

Thermalright SK-7* (using a 80x15mm L1A)
SVC GoldenGate (very short)
Alpha PAL-6035 *
Stock AMD/Coolermaster*

I've used all with good results. The stock Coolermaster HS that comes with AMD CPU's actually does a decent job, though the fan is a little whiney. My main rig uses the SK-7 with an 80x15 and it's nearly dead silent and does a great job of cooling. You should also make sure that your power supply is well-ventilated on the bottom (the side that faces the CPU cooler) so that warm air is properly exhausted.

Pete
