Athlon XP 1800+ CPU - Need to run with NO Fan :)

Post by gonsped » Tue May 20, 2003 3:16 pm

By any chance the Athlon XP 1800+ CPU could run without a fan? I was thinking of the Thermalright SLK-900U heatsink but thats just seems very expensive for a heatsink let alone the weight might crush the CPU.

I am NOT overclocking in any way - just need to work on my computer without noise (PSU, Northbridge, VGA cooling, HDD noise disregarded for the time being - still working on those problems). So I really want to make this PC without fans - literally. So I can leech at nite without noise :P

Mmmm.....Apple Cube..... *poof* - Oops - was dreaming :D

Another solution I was thinking is to get a *pretty good* heatsink so I can run using a fan that is controlled using a fan controller and really lower the rpm while it idles and full speed when CS-ing.....

Any suggestion folks? :D

The standard suggestions of a SLK-800/900 (or other top cooler of your choice) with Panaflo 80L at 5-7V works. It is just about noiseless even at close range, and inside a case... will be drowned out by your PSU or HDD anyway. Fanless is a nice idea but complex & expensive. Even a small amount of airflow achieves a lot of cooling.

Only if you never do anything with it. As it has the potential at default settings for over 50W heat generation, pure convection is highly unlikely to cope. Like Mike says, a low flow fan will mean you will be pretty safe and your other components more likely a bigger problem.

I dunno, if you used this processor you might be able to get a passive cooling. Also if you undervolted it below 1.5v you would be even better off.

And if you want to OC some people can get a 100% OC with a good motherboard and cooling.

It could be possible with a Athlon XP Mobile.
Or a really huge heatsink. Here at the forum there was a link to a modded AX7. There was a really huge heatsink glued on the top.

passive cooling any processor with over 20 W of heat generation will be difficult; take the VIA processors- they're latest 15 W one has a fan. 1 low airflow fan makes a huge difference.

The problem with a mobile processor is the key to its power (or lack there of) is low usage and special software.

You won't be able to hear an undervolted NMB and it will make a huge difference in coolig.

If that article really acheived passive cooling; P4 thermal throttling was doing all the work.

Do you know this http://www.dirkvader.de/page/ac-dp101.html?
I owned this cooler and I run a 1700+ with 1,75V without a fan!
After 1 hour Prime95 MBM5 says 57 °C 8) ...

so long[/img]

i've seen allot of people run their procs without a fan on just teh standard heatsink. You'll proabbly run 45-50 deg but it won't die. I know my heatsink fan has bee disconnected on accident and ran for a while at 2 ghz (Im talking aobut my 1800 dltc)

Dryfire: I dunno what CPUs ur talking about running 45-50C without a fan on a standard heatsink. I am currently testing my computer with the WBK68 heatsink and a crappy old 486 teeny weeny fan and it idles at 52-53C. With CS it can max at 59-60C.

Regarding your 1800 - I've read that they are suppose to withstand up to 90C - but i think thats too much and 65C is as high as you would want to go based on other's experiences.

lol yeah your right. i was thinking more like 55-60 (idle) with a decent heatsink.

i don't see teh point in not putting an undervolted l1a or m1a on it. it would be quieter then the baracudda IV. i doubt he could hear it.

and form what i hear tbred b cores die aroun 85. but i could be wrong.

Hell, on my aluminum HS that I'm guessing was close to the stock Athlon HSF, I couldn't get lower than 50C WITH a 12v vantec stealth. Unplugging the fan got temps up past 70 C pretty quickly (then I turned it off)

I do always keep my comp at full load though.
