new q6600 quad, want quiet cpu cooler

Post by duncan bladen » Sun Aug 10, 2008 2:25 am

i have just replaced my e6750c2d , with a q6600 quad , very nice it is too, but the stock cooler is tooo loud for me ! i have used zalman in my old s939, and it was so quiet , but i understand from reading the site that its no longer the quietest cooler available . would any one care to recommend the quiet est cooler ? i have gigabyte p35 ds3r [ver1.0] mobo , in antec p180 case . i was looking at scythe mine ? any comments appreciated

Have you looked at SPCR's lists of recommended heatsinks and fans?

Not if you focus on those at the top of the list. If I'm not mistaken, your board can control the speed of non-PWM CPU fans, so a Xigmatek HDT-S1283 + Noctua NF-S12-1200 should be inaudible in normal use, and cool & quiet even under heavy load.

Easily available at Scan, as are most (possibly all..) of the SPCR recommended heatsinks.

Be careful buying fans, though. I picked a Scythe and got shipped a Noctua.

hr01, ultra 120, 1283, ninja, etc... all the top tower heatsinks perform very similarly. the real differences are in price, fin spacing (important depending on the fan speed you plan to use), and mounting system. of those three things maybe one of them actually matters to most people.

Post by duncan bladen » Wed Aug 13, 2008 10:29 am

scythe ninja 2 , with scythe 800rpm mod , or Xigmatek HDT-S1283 , with same fan ? , its down to these two , but im also liking the Noctua NH-U12P, oh god why did i start this ? my head hurts

Xigmatek. Cheap, effective. Don't forget the bolt-thru kit (Scan sell those, too).

Possibly better temperatures. Contact with the pins on the Xigmatek is very good, but I did notice a several degree difference when I bolted mine down. However I also applied TIM differently..

However, the big difference is a bolted heatsink will not come off. I would not trust pins to hold a large heatsink down for transport, or even walking up and down the stairs to work on the machine (we have cats..).

hahahah , i have a cat , they are funny arent they ? have opted for the scyhte ninja copper , as its was selling for a very good price , and comes with the 800 rpm fan as standard . it arrives tommorow , so all i have to do is remove the motherboard , and fit it - heres to quiet computing

scythe ninja copper

Post by duncan bladen » Sat Aug 16, 2008 1:35 am

what a nightmare to fit , on the gigabyte ge -p35-ds3r .
mobo out, the ninja copper , uses s478 mounts , but the clip that attaches to the heatsink fouls the capacitors at the top of the socket .
it has to be fitted with mounts running east/ west , instead of north/ south . then when fitting the mounting clips must go to the top of the board , [not a problem in a p180 case ] . nice and quiet with the 800rpm fan , cant hear it ! idle is about 42 , with no other case fans , and after gaming for 2 hrs - still only 56-58 c .
next mod is silent heatsink for the 3850, and a noctua silent fan to go in bottom of case to cool harddrive , and power supply .

Upload at http://imageshack.us. Then paste the link/thumbnail here.

Test the link once copied in a post here to ensure it works correctly - size etc. is what I mean.

i'm amazed you trust that heatsink on your board.

does your motherboard flex at all? if so what's your opinion about maybe a bracket or using wire or string to hold the ninja up to prevent that flex?

no flex at all really, but the clips are a nightmare to do /undo with the board in . i once had a dead board and tried physically to bend it , it took all of my weight and strength to bend it even a bit ![im 14.5 stones ][just over 200lb ] . anyway - its guaranteed by manufacturer - so i would be chasing them for a new mobo - if anything happens .. getting temps of 37deg c @idle with the one fan thats silent [room temp is 22.3c ] . took out the antec tri cool fans - too noisy even on low . ordered a noctua 800rpm fan to go in lower section of case to cool hdd and power supply . and gonna make a vane to direct some cool air upwards, also fitting arctic cooling silent heatpipe to graphics card on tuesday

Thanks for the picture. Any chance of a bigger pic please?

Next thing you might want to do (unless you're not bothered about it) is sort out the cabling?

gonna have a tidy out in the case when extra fan and cooling arrives . im really not good with photos/photo bucket guys n gals , so im afaraid that , thats the best i can do atm . UPDATE - put 1 antec tri cool back in rear of pc , and found it was dragging air in from to vent , so have closed vent off , thus forcing the fan to pull cool air in from front . room temp 21.6, system temp 45, cpu temp is 28c, individual cores are 1=37, 2=34,2=33, 4 =33 -- all in deg c . gpu is 54c, [soon to be passively cooley with arctic cooling silenator :)
