Cooling a Slot 1 P3 1Ghz quietly

Post by ThirdStrike4Life » Mon May 25, 2009 4:27 pm

I had a question about an old Slot 1 P3 1Ghz that I had. Right now it is running an old ABIT motherboard. The computer runs fine, except for the crazy loud and whiny retail heatsink for the P3.
I found an old heatsink that was used on a slot 1 P3 550. I'm not sure what brand it is but it pretty much looks like this in the picture.

"startech slot 1 SECC2 heatsink" on google
(I can't post urls yet)

I looked at other heatsinks that are still around and they all seem to use 40mm fans.

Two questions, can I just clip on a 80mm or 120mm fan? Second question is a little dumb, but would I need thermal paste for the heatsink?

Running it passive would probably not be a good idea since it gets pretty hot in that room and the air flow in that case is not that great.
Any suggestions on this would be great.

Welcome to SPCR!

I would say that a quiet 80mm fan could be attached to the heatsink, and it would be both cooler and quieter?

You could use the Zalman PCI bracket also:

I would be hesitant to clip a 120mm fan onto the heat sink - might put extra twist or stress on the heat sink clips or CPU mount.

Instead you might consider how to mount the fan nearby so it provides airflow over the heat sink. You could use something like a Zalman FB123 to mount a larger fan to blow on the heatsink without attaching the fan to the heatsink.

The posting below is an example of where I adapted an 80mm case fan bracket to hold an 80mm fan to cool CPU in a slot-1 system.

There are some slot-1 heat sinks that were designed to work without fans (larger) - I have a couple that came on 600 MHz or so CPUs, not sure how such would do cooling 1GHz cpus.

Most of the slot-1 coolers I have seen have a thermal transfer pad. Think they were designed for one-time application, so if reusing the heatsink may need to remove the old pad and apply thermal compound.
(May also find that using heatsink compound gives lower temperature than using the original pad.)

Thanks for the welcome guys and advice. I'll try some artic silver and a 80mm fan clipped on first to see how it goes. A spcr recommended 80mm fan can't be louder than the retail heatsink. If the clip doesn't work I'll look into the zalman FB123. Thanks again for the advice.

Good time for some ancient history... a pic from one of the earliest articles in SPCR shows how to recycle a slot cover to hold a fan over a CPU or video card:

How i did it on a socket370 p3 933...:

Double-sided tape on the bottom of the psu, fan around 1-2cm away from the stock intel heatsink.. works perfectly.

Obviously its not that easy on a slot1 cpu, but it could be done fairly simple anyhow :)

It depends what Slot 1 cooler you have, there are a few different reference designs by age. Any chance of a picture? If it's one with a set of straight fins, it'll be 112mm long so a 120mm may be at the limit of what you can attach. I have a 550 which runs passive with a heatsink swap:

My Micron came with a passive heatsink on the PIII 733 and rear 92mm case fans. Case airflow was very good, but there was no direct flow to the CPU, so I would think that mounting a bigger fan in the ways suggected above may be adequate.

Let me try and fish it out of the garage somewhere to take a picture. All I remember it was used passively on a Slot 1 P3 550 until it fried. It looks like the one from geeks from what I remember but can't be 100% sure.

From what I remember it looked just like this.
