Hi,
I was planning to use the Mugen II for Q9550 CPU (no OC)
but its out of stock and will take some time to be back in,
will the above be as good and quiet?

Why don't you buy a CM Z600 and keep it fanless?

Hi,

It's a good cooler, but the S1283 will be better on a Q9550.

The Achilles is a Xigmatek S1284 with a pretty fan and a chrome finish.

The "4" in 1284 stands for 4 (double) heapipes. The Q9550 is a relatively small CPU and you don't get good thermal contact to all four pipes in consequence. The S1284 works great on i7 CPUs, but the S1283 (3 heatpipes) gets better thermal contact on Q9xxx.

It's not a big deal - in my tests the 1284 outperformed the 1283 by about 2C at max load on an i7, but the 1283 outperformed the 1284 by 1.5C on a Q9xxx.

With proper fan. Regular HDT-S1283 has decent fan with it ( just get crossbow bolt-thru kit and the standard PWM fan is good for begin ) The red scorpion, achilles and dark knight have clear led fans made out of brittle plastic and higher RPM so avoid them. ( the fan is horrible in RedScorpion, it hisses growls, ticks and has bad toanlity )

Scythe Kama PWM is excellent coice and current my HDT-S1283 RedScorpion with Scythe Kama PWM idles around 420 rpm's. It keeps my Cores at 38C and CPU around 32-34C range. E8400 is slightly cooler than Q9550 or C7i's though.

Having said that, I find I still can't hear my system regardless unless within 1m of it and its around 12 at night (less ambient noise). I'm running a Red Scorpion but due to case damping its quiet enough.
