Need replacement quiet cpu cooler

Post by cnsjones » Fri May 11, 2012 12:39 pm

First post. Excuse if previously answered.

My desktop, in Antec case, has whining (original) cpu cooler
ASUS P7P55/Intel i7-870; 4 G ram; I do NOT overclock. No real heavy usage.

I do not want to have to remove MB nor do I want a huge heavy cooling replacement for the original.

I do want a quiet, easily installed replacement for the Intel thing.

Advice please -- Under $40 if possible.

TIA

Am I in the wrong place here?

It's the right place to post.

Very few of the 1366 socket heatsinks we review use the original push-pins, mostly because they are not meant to be used that often -- ie installed & uninstalled -- and the aftermarket for coolers is driven by enthusiasts who seek much better solutions and multiple un/installations w/o issues. Mostly, enthusiast heatsinks have bolt-through-the-board mounting which assures high, consistent pressure on the interface between HS & CPU. 1366 socket CPUs are generally hot beasts which bemnefit from the improved mounting and large heatsinks associated with them.

One of the few 1366 coolers I can think of which combines a simpler top-access only mounting system and improved noise/cooling over stock is the Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 series. The Freezer 13 CO, for example, should satisfy your needs.

Thanks. I also looked at the Frezer11 LP, that also seems like it would work.

One idea I found here by browsing is the possibility of replacing the existing fan on the cooler with an aftermarket fan. I wonder who has done that actually, and which ones would do the job. My cpu is the i7-870 LGA 1156.

TIA

Ah, my error in thinking it was a 1366. That CPU isn't so bad for heat.

Depending on which stock HSF you have, this mod might work for you:

If you don't want to remove your motherboard, then I'd recommend a Scythe Katana 3. It should be sufficient for your needs. If that's not available, then perhaps a Scythe Samurai ZZ.
