TRUE Rev.C vs HR-01 PLUS (Passive/500RPM)

P183 Advanced
i5 2500K Sandy Bridge 1155 socket
Xigmatek HDT-S1283 w/ 120mm 7v Arctic Cooling fan
[Stock Passive: 40C/65C]
[4.00GHz Passive: 45C/75C]
[4.00GHz 500RPM: 32C/62C]
2x Scythe Slipstream 1,200 RPM @ 5v (top/exh)
HD 5670 Ultimate 1GB (Passive)

My CPU temps are good passive but need a low RPM fan for 4.00GHz. The Xigmatek is very worn due to many systems it has been through.

I'm stuck between the HR-01 PLUS (Getting HR-01X with 1156 Mount kit) and TRUE Rev.C, I am planning to either try passive @ 4.00GHz or run a 500RPM Slipstream. I know the HR-01X is the same as the HR-01 PLUS but with server mounts (confirmed from thermalright customer service). I also know that the HR-01 PLUS is better at low airflow than the previous TRUE.

Mount Kit: £4 (need for both)
HR-01X: £23
TRUE Rev.C £32

Anyone know how say a TRUE Rev.C would compare to a HR-01 PLUS with low/passive airflow.

I honestly think you should keep using a low speed fan and not go passive.

If you had said that you can hear the extra ~ 0.X DB generated from the sub 500 RPM fan from outside of the closed P183 case I would have called you are a liar.

I'd keep the Xigmatec too. Intel i5 [email protected] and 32/62 temps with the 500RPM Slipstream is very very good IMO.
I'm currently setting up my i7 2600 in a P183. I'm cooling it using TRUE (not rev C) and Slipstream 800 connected to the motherboard header (about 400 RPM when idle and all the way up to 800 when at load).
temps are 32-61 stock. I'm also still with Antec fans on top/back of the P183. So I'm getting similar temps to yours but with more air flow, and likely higher noise level that yours.

Sadly, I have no experience using the HR1.

That is real real real impressive. Despite my blabbering here:

your results make me want to try a passively cooled [email protected].

1. The 2500K has so much horsepower, even when I dump any plausible real life heavy load on it, its going to be almost running passive (45C) as opposed to full load (75C). At some point, when you have such a muscular CPU, the synthetic burn in tests lose their meaning.

2. Why not try an HR-01 PLUS or even better an HR-2. That will take your CPU temps even lower. I have to admit that my recommendation is somewhat selfish. I would like to see how that works for you before I copy it :)

3. I am still concerned about motherboard temps if I go completely passive. Here is what I am thinking of as a solution to that concern:

Use a small black APEX MI-008. Cut a 180mm hole in the top and cover it with a black Silverstone Fan Filter (used for their 180mm fans). Use two SSDs inside the case for a boot drive and data drive. Use an external HHD esata hard drive dock for when I need to use a large HDD drive (not that often).

I can remove the built in APEX PSU and just run a Seasonic Passive PSU external to it, hooked up to the Apex case with the Seasonic modular cables. Lian Li has some nice steel/rubber feet that I can fit onto the PSU so it doesn't scratch anything. The Seasonic PSU looks nice standing along. I will have to make no apologies for it's looks as a stand alone outside of the case.

I can then fit the Noctua NH-C14 into the APEX MI-008. See:

Removing the PSU heat from the case, opening up the top, and putting in that huge Noctua NH-C14 should keep the temps all around cool. If not, I can always hook up a 500 rpm slipstream underneath the Noctua CPU cooler (unfortunately there won't be room for a fan on the top). But it might be that this will keep the motherboard plenty cool without need for any fan. The case already has a lot of air circulation even without a 180mm hole in the top.

The only problem is I will have to wait for a 2500K ITX board running the forthcoming Z67 chipset.

4. What do you think. Does it make some kind of twisted sense, or am I maybe smoking something?

Ame I'm going buy a new heatsink monday anyway for fun and comparisons too :).

I've never used a thermalright product in all these years so I figured I'd start now.

Ces the HR-02 quite a bit more even with trade prices (£45).

So I think I'll pass that for a HR-01 PLUS + Mount Kit (£26).

I'm going to go HR-01 PLUS :D

Oh yeah ces I ran a simular i5 670 Q07 build a while go, you should be fine as long as you make sure that enough hot air is being removed from the little case.

Small cases and high end CPU/GPUS don't do as well with low airflow in my experiance.

1. You can't go wrong with the HR-01 PLUS. And if the mounting kit you are talking about is the famous Thermalright one that generates 80 lbs of pressure, and I suspect it is... you have a real winning combination. I seem to recollect somewhere that turning the pressure all the way up to 80# is good for a few extra degrees of cooling.

2. If you avoid using the Thermalright Thermal interface paste you should be able to pick a fairly solid 1C temp drop (maybe more) by using Arctic Silver 5 instead.

Arctic Cooling MX-2 is better than Arctic Silver 5 if you aren't that good at mounting CPU coolers. It's easier to work with and performs almost as well. It has other advantages as well. It doesn't require a burn in period like AC5 in order to get working properly (I understand you actually have to run your computer through a number of heating up and cooling off cycles for over 200 hours to properly cure AC5). MX-2 works optimally as soon as you are done with the mount. Also MX-2 is not electrically conductive. AS5 is electrically conductive, so you need to be a bit more careful with it.

Though if you want that last half a degree and are willing to deal with its particular issues, its pretty hard to beat Arctic Silver 5

Both Hardware Cunucks & Benchmark Reviews are very credible and trustworthy review sites. When it comes to temperature issues (as opposed to sound level issues) I put them right up there with SPCR.

Intel Burn Test: 15 Mins 67C

Now do remember that my previous system had the Xigmatek @ 700-800rpm
