Small Cooler for Intel i7 3770 CPU

Post by DBM999 » Sat Nov 17, 2012 7:02 pm

Are any CPU coolers as small, efficient and silent as Intel's stock cooler?

I would like to find a cooler whose length and width are no greater than the Intel i7 3770 cooler's diameter. I don't care about the height so much. Obviously, I would want it to be quieter. The 3770's CPU's max TDP is 77W.

Two classic CPU coolers that come close to fitting this profile are:
  • Scythe Kozuti
    • 110 (L) x 103 (W) x 40 (H) mm
  • Arctic Cooling Freezer 11 LP
    • 115 (L) x 106 (W) x 53 (H) mm
Scythe Kozuti Low Profile CPU Heatsink - Review (June 2011):

Arctic Cooling Freezer 11 LP - OEM Product Info:

Any other suggestions?

The Noctua NH-L9i might do the job. It's 95x95x37mm and despite its 65 Watt rating, it should be able to cool a 77 Watt CPU if you have good airflow in your case.

According to one review, it is slightly louder at 12V than the Intel stock cooler when cooling a 65 Watt CPU with better cooling performance. At 7V it cools better than the stock cooler at 12 V.

So far I have not seen a review with a 77 Watt CPU and the SPRC review is still outstanding, too.

I take it that for length and width to be small it basically has to fit within the dimensions of the mounting bracket?

If height is not important but length and width are then what about a small tower cooler? Noctua for example do some which take a 92mm fan and there are many others. As you have already looked at AC, they have plenty of small tower coolers in their back catalogue, many of which have just an 80mm fan so are small in length and width.

The Scythe Samurai ZZ might be tall, but the length and width is very small. And it performs quite well.
