Hi-end 6700K Build - Need CPU Cooler Advice!

Post by Bghead8che » Thu Jan 07, 2016 3:23 pm

My potential system (not yet purchased):

Windows 10 64-BIT
Corsair 600Q
Geforce GTX 980Ti X 2
Samsung 950 Pro 512MB X 2
Intel 6700K (goal is 4.5 - 4.8GHZ)
Kingston HyperX Fury Black 32GB DDR4-2666
MSI Z170A GAMING M9 ACK
be quiet! 1100W Platinum PS

As per above I want to overlock my CPU to 4.5 to 4.8. I don't want to do open loop liquid cooling so I've narrowed my choices down to a Noctua NH-D15 or a Corsair H110i GTX.

Pros and Cons:

Noctuah NH-D15

+ Reliable
+ Low Noise
+ Less cable clutter
+ Simple, proven solution
+ LNA
+ No software

- Collects dust and is hard to clean
- A few degrees hotter under load compared to Corsair
- Hard to transport, could break off. I may need to ship the computer 1 or 2 times and removing the heat sink is not an option.
- Covers RAM slots limiting choices.

Corsair H110i GTX

+ Better cooling
+ Won’t break off in shipping
+ Less space, better RAM clearance
+ Collects less dust and easier to clean

- Noisy pumps?
- Fan noise and rattles?
- Buggy Corsair Link software
- Cable clutter

Can the Corsair Link be set and run w/out the software running at startup and in the background all the time? Or does the software need to be run full time in order to control/monitor the fans, pump? The con list is based on my experience with an earlier model from Corsair. I found the Corsair Link to be buggy and near useless, the fans rattled, and the pump noise was distracting.

Which one would you guys buy/recommend? I’m solidly on the fence and I can’t decide. I’m worried about shipping the Noctua installed however on the other hand I’m worried about the potentially crappy fans and pump noise from the Corsair unit.

Thanks for any and all advice!

Given the degree of overclock you wish to apply the Corsair H110i GTX is a somewhat inevitable choice. Fan noise under idle conditions is potentially something that can be addressed via the motherboard BIOS and/or fan control software settings but at full fan speed (around 2000 rpm) with two 140mm fans this cooler could be noisy.

Think you asked this elsewhere, but answer is the same. Stay away from CLCs. Get a good air cooler and have no worries. At best, H110 might give you a couple degrees more cooling. Setting up your case airflow to supply component with air as close as possible to room ambient will generally give you 5-15c better cooler.
You might find some of the info in the link below helpful. Please ask questions here on SPCR if you have any.
