We know that going with a larger slow spinning fan generally results in better airflow/noise performance, due to more surface area and less rpm required.
But what about going with a thicker fan? I'm looking for a really good case fan that can move a lot of air at low RPMs. Would going with 38mm be a practical solution?
I haven't heard of any 38mm fans being tailored for low noise.
Thick 38mm vs 25mm fans?

I never had the chance to use one by myself, but SilenX fans are not treated well inhere, be careful!
I only had a short experience with a Scythe Ultra Kaze 1000, and it wasn't anything special. Noisier than any other 1000 RPM fan I ever used, though it surely has its uses. 38mm fans are not made to move more air by the way, they're made to push it harder, creating higher pressure. Best way to move more air per RPM is to get a Slipstream and try to reduce any kind of constriction to the resulting airflow.
