Now that I've quieted my main computer, the loudest component is my external FireWire enclosure which has one of those very small fans (40mm or so?) at high RPMs.
Anyone know if this fan is necessary for operation? Or of a slower, quieter small fan?
Quiet very small fans/external enclosures?

Sunon has a 40mm x 20mm (double thick) fan that I use 7-volted on my HDD mobile racks. It's 9cfm/27dB at 12V. I don't know if these'd fit in your external case, maybe you could mod it a little. They keep my HDD temps the same as the stock, but much noisier, 40mm x 10mm 12V fans.
It's model #KD1204PKB1. I got mine from KDcomputers.com
I also tried a Sunon 40 x 10 fan to replace the stock 40mm fan and they were a little quieter, but not much.

Papst also make nice 40mm fans.
If it's a driveenclosure then you could probably make your own enclosure, by sticking some heatsinks on the side of the drive and making a box that encloses the electronics and the drive but not the heatsink.
They should protrude from the enclosure and be cooled by the air around.
