Fans that blow the other way.....

Post by Bluefront » Sat Nov 05, 2005 5:00 pm

Like every computer fan I've ever seen blows from the spinning hub/blades toward the motor and it's mount struts.

I'll be.....I found an Antec 80mm fan that blows the other way. It is in a USB fan thing. Clear frame, very noisy. I wonder if any other computer fans blow this direction?

I can't think of a particular use for such a fan, but you never know.

A use? Making an exhaust duct with a zalman heatsink.

Heh....forgot about that, since I never owned one. Too bad this is only 80mm...

Surely just turning the fan to face the opposite direction has exactly the same effect...

Hi Scotty,

yes it would.

But the idea here is to be able use the fan hub (like with the Zalman) as a fixing point. So a "normal" fan would blow towards the Zalman's center while being screwed from the hub to the heatsink. Now, if you wanted to suck air through the fins and away from the heatsink, you couldn't screw the fan in place, because the hub is facing the wrong way. Now if the fan is inverted so to speak, the hub would be on the bottom in this case and allow fixing.

Does my description make sense to anyone? :?

Yeah it does make sense......but it does sound confusing to an average person.

None of us around here are average, are we?

Sorry about that, didn't realise you had a 7000 series cooler. I've got a VF700 and I'd love a 'reverse' fan for it.

Arctic Cooling case fans (Arctic Fans) also blow this "wrong way", although their nonstandard fan blade dimensions might limit their usefulness. I have one and the whole assembly is 45mm tall, and the fan blades themselves are over 25mm wide.
