I was wondering if fan adapters truly work, I.E. 80 mm to 60 mm? Does the restriction of the reduction cause the fan to work harder and possibly increase noise levels?
I am building a new PC and want to keep it cool but NOISE is a major concern.

Thanks.

HardOCP did an article on fan adapters. The adapters did nothing really.

If you want to put an 80mm fan on a heatsink, you can:
1) Buy an SK-7 or an SLK800 or something like them. They can fit 80mm fans, and the heatsinks are of very high quality. I'm using an SK-7 now, and the combination of the Arctic Silver 3, the new heatsink and the larger fan have reduced my CPU temp 20+ degrees F under load.
2) Screw an 80mm fan onto your 60mm heatsink. I did this while I was waiting for my SK-7 to arrive. Temps dropped quite a bit, and the system was quieter. I don't really recommend this for long term use though.
