ADDA 120mm How Quiet?

Post by MC FLMJIG » Tue Jan 02, 2007 6:03 pm

ADDA AD1212MB-A73GL

If these can be Vmodded t 7 or 5V how quiet will they be?

80Cfm @ 38dba (I know most companies rate sound differently) Is this phony?

If this is Vmodded to 7V what CFM and DBA is expected?
What about 5V?

I usually buy Yates but if Vmodded this can sound pretty quiet I wouldn't mind. Especially at the price.

Well, its a medium speed ball bearing fan.. So I would not expect it to be terribly quiet.

Why not grab some Yate Loons @ jab-tech for 3.50 each?

Search the forums for reports on Scythe S-Flex E - you'll get an idea on how does this fan perform at 5V (both share the same impeller design).

Hello,

Well, the Adda models that are used in SeaSonic PS are quiet, but this one looks to run a bit faster...2050RPM is too fast to be quiet.

Yes, as Neil said, these are the same models used in Seasonic PSUs. Except that they have a 3-pin fan header. (A73GL) So that sounds promising as the Seasonics are quiet PSUs. But they also start the fan at 3.8V. By the time the fan gets to 5V, it's not so quiet anymore. Probably closer to a Nexus at 12V. But the ball bearings probably won't be as smooth as the Nexus.

I actually found a pair of low speed ADDA fans on eBay last weekend for 9$ shipped. We'll see how good they are. If anything, they should make a good fan swap for a 120mm PSU. Assuming these also can run at low voltages.

Thanks guys.

If you look at the specs, of course assuming they are correct, they are a tad louder than Yate loons at full.

Yate on high aren't that bad but once you put them in a case they do make a tad amount of noise. I figured if Vmodded to 7 or even 5V they would sound similar. Yates ate 5V are pretty much silent. Hey, even at 7V depending on the case they are very silent.

I may give it a shot. Worse case I can always sell them around my way for the same price I bought!!!

Thanks again.

Are you talking about low speed YL? They spin about 1200rpm. The ADDA ones you're looking at run at 2050rpms. Ignoring any cfm/dbA claims, a 2000+ rpm 120mm fan is going to be loud. Much louder than a 1200rpm 120mm fan. At 5V it might be getting down to about the YL 1200rpm. But again, it's ball bearings vs. sleave. So it still probably won't sound as good as a 12V low speed YL.

If this was a 4-pin PWM fan I could see this being a good choice for a CPU fan for it's increased reliability and quality vs. sleeve bearing fans.

For case fans I don't have a problem with sleeve bearings and the Yate Loons are much easier to get down to quiet levels.
