Looking for upgrade over Antec TriCool "LOW"

Post by mtx » Sat Dec 15, 2007 1:42 am

Looking for something that pushes more air than the Antec TriCool "Low" but produces the same amount of silence.

Scythe S-FLEX SFF21E 120MM Cooling Fan 1200RPM 20.1DBA 49.0CFM FDB (SFF21E)

Scythe Slip Stream Kaze Jyuni 120MM Fan 800RPM 40.1CFM 10.7DBA (SY1225SL12L) (SY1225SL12L)

Scythe Ultra Kaze 120MM High Static Pressure Silent Fan 38MM 1000RPM 44.4CFM 19.8DBA

This is to replace 3 of the fans in my Antec P182 and one CPU FAN on my Thermalright. I also plan on getting a Corsair HX620. Which fans would be best?

Hello,

You cannot make any judgments by looking at the numbers published for various fans; they are all over the map.

Having said that: if the Tri-Cool on low is quiet enough for you -- what are the temps that you are seeing that you think need to be lower?

Buy the slipstreams for your case fans, and the Ultra Kaze for your heatsink.

im sure my temps are "fine", but im doing a very big order with my friend so i thought i might as well pick up some fans while im at it...
the slipstream / ultra kaze fans are $6 a piece, unfortunately they dont have the 1000RPM 68/24 version but whatever, 40/10 should be very silent......

right now i got a yate loon ds12L on my thermalright @ 5v but i think the ultra kaze 40/20 is better right?

The Ultra Kaze will for sure provide higher pressure capability (at equal RPM). At 12V, the YL will give the UK a tussle over pressure for two reasons: the YL is about the lowest-pitch "normal" 7-blade fan going, and at ~1350RPM, given that pressure is equal to the square of the RPM, it just might have higher pressure than the UK.

I'm out of step on this, but I don't think the fin spacing is all that tight on the Thermalright HSF. If you're looking for the lowest noise for a given amount of cooling, a SlipStream fan just might fit the bill. Mind, you won't find many folk at SPCR with the same opinion, and I'm taking an educated guess ("educated" because I've played around with the SlipStreams quite a bit).

how would the ultra kaze be in a solo as the exhaust fan? I think it would normally spin at 750rpm under-volted by my motherboard.

I'm looking to swap out the tri-cools in my P180 case. As I have a Noctua CPU cooler and fan, I was looking at changing all the tri-cools to Noctua NF-S12 fans. I suppose while I'm at it I might as well swap out the tri-cools in my HTPC (Fusion) too, although they're barely audible from where I'm sat.

What about running a Scythe S-Flex D as your exhaust? If your suffering the same problem as me (i.e. the system fan header for the exhaust fan is not adjustable by software) why not plug in a D? Provided you get a good one, it will only run at 800rpm and you don't have to worry about undervolting.

I might be going this route as the exhaust is easily the loudest component of my system right now (save HD seeks and activity).

Hello,

I would seriously consider the 500, 800, and maybe the 1200RPM versions of the Scythe Slipstream fans. These are probably the quietest fans at the moment.
