Fan Cable Length

Post by JEN » Sun May 11, 2003 11:44 am

I will be needing some fan cable extensions so I can plug the fans into the fan switch. They are extremely pricey at £5.

How difficult is it to increase the length manually, by cutting the wires off of old fans and soldering they onto the new fans?

Will I just have to solder then on, or is it more complex???

See if you can find a better price. Here in the U.S., svc.com sells 12-inch 3-pin fan power extensions for $1 each.

But it should be very easy to extend the cable length. I've never done it myself, but I can't see any reason why a few strips of bulk wire, a bit of soldering, and electrical tape won't do the trick. In fact, I think I'll go ahead and do that to my own fans! Thanks for the idea! :)

It's easy. But if you suck at soldering as much as I do, you can use a terminal block.

JEN -- I bought fan extension cables recently at the Tottenham court road computer fair for just £1.50 each. They are pretty neat. From the receipt I got the following details...

Abbey Computer Products

Tel : 020 8848 7438 / Mobile 07799 32 35 46

Hope that helps.

Thanks for all the replies

I am a bit far from london so I can't go to Abbey Computer Products!

So far I like the terminal block idea :)

1 question though, do I need to use a specific type of wire? Can anyone recommend type of wire which is best for this job.

I don't really know what the proper name would be, but pretty much any 22 gage (22 AWG) or thicker wire. Smaller numbers are thicker. You will want multistrand wire, not solid wire, though they are pretty much all multistrand. The typical fan wires are 22 AWG multistrand.
