which panaflo fan for CPU heatsink?

Post by philmooreuk » Thu Jun 05, 2003 10:24 am

Hi

I have read on this forum about the panaflo L1A being the best fan.

Is it Ok to use it on the CPU heatsinnk?
Or is there a different panaflo for the heatsink?

I have a heatsink with a 40mm fan on it.
So I would need a bracket to convert it to for a 80mm fan.
Can you buy such brackets and if so whereabouts if you are from the UK?

I guess half of the fan would blow onto nothing if I got a panaflo 80mm one, but I am told that would be best.

I would like to know what is the best way to reduce the speed of the fan?
I have read many ways on this site, but it becomes confusing after a while.
I will also need to control the speed of the case fan so would a mutiple fan controller be a good idea or something else?

Is it totally safe to reduce the voltage of the fan to 7V?

If you have any ideas, advice or opinions on any of my questions I would be very greatful if you could please let me know.

Thanks for your help.

Yours

Phil

You would be a lot better off getting a new HS -- one that is designed for a 40mm fan won't really be a good fit for an 80mm fan. What CPU is in your machine? (You might be able to use a bracket to hold a fan above the HS, similar to the Zalman, or make one from a slot cover.)

The Panaflo L1A is a fine fan to use on a HS, and even at 5V it'll be blowing a gale compared to any 40mm at 12V!

Is this 40mm fan the noisiest thing in your system? How is the power supply?

Thanks for your help Neil.

I have slot A althlon 700 processor. I am not sure what sort of heatsink it is.
Apparently Slot A althlon 700s are not that common so I am not sure about where you would get another heatsink.
Would you know anywhere?

Like you mentioned, there are othey noisy parts of the pc.

I bought a new PSU 300W from quietpc.co.uk and a new seagate barracuda IV hard drive, and they all helped, but it is still pretty noisy.
So I guessed it must be the CPU fan.
