Strange "Hard Drive" Like Fan Noise

Post by FredsterPrime » Fri Jun 13, 2014 11:31 pm

I thought this is worth reporting, although the fan in question has already been swapped out. I had a 120mm CoolerMaster fan that came with a Seidon 240M radiator that started making "hard drive" noise, coordinated with SSD or CPU activity. It was the strangest thing because I had an SSD, so I couldn't figure out at first what was going on. Since it's water cooled, running an Avast scan really doesn't generate enough heat for the MB to raise the fan FPMs, but it definitely made the fan chatter in direct correspondence with activity. (If I moved the fan to a different header, the noise continued ... somehow the CPU and/or SSD activity still made it chatter.)

With BIOS fan regulation, it shouldn't need any CPU cycles for control, and I can't believe the fan voltage was being pulled down, so it's still a mystery to me as to the cause. It would instantly start and stop with activity--too quickly to be heat or even RPM related.
