12v fan with 9v mod - please help

Post by mczuzlak » Sat Jun 02, 2012 7:15 am

I want to install a Scythe Slip Stream Slim 800 RPM fan under my AppleTV.
I want to undervolt it to 9V so as I have it running around 600 RPM.

I've an old 9V adapter here at home. Can I just simply cut the red and black wires of the fan (no need yellow if I'm right) and attach them to the 9v and ground wires of the adapter ?

Is that it or is it the wrong thing to do ? :P

thank you

Don't go cutting wire. Get something from here

Or something like this (if you are cutting wire, your only options are 5v, 7v, and 12v unless you add a resistor to the equation)

Or this

Thank you but this isn't what I need. All this is assuming that you have a motherboard where you can connect the cables.
I need to cut the wired to be able to use the adapter because its going to be plugged in the power network (Or grid ? Sorry I don't know the exact english word )

Is it wrong to cut the cables or would it work the way I plan to do ?

Actually I am not making such an assumption. At Performance PCs you can find any cable you might need to connect to your fan to any source of power. They will even make up custom cables for you if you ask.

If you want to power your fan directly from your PSU, you will find multiple solutions. This one is my favorite:
