140mm fan recommendation?

Post by Cheetah » Fri Aug 31, 2012 4:50 am

I have a build which is in this case: http://resources.mini-box.com/online/EN ... ure-b2.jpg

Code: Select all

Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB
Scythe Kozuti
Samsung Green 8GB (2x4GB)
Intel Core i7-3770K
Asrock Z77E-ITX
150W Pico PSU + 150W Power Brick
Now the only fan is the one on the heatsink, the Scythe Kozuti. This fan is too loud for my liking so what I am going to do is get rid of that fan (but keep the heatsink) and mount a 140mm fan on top of the case blowing air out of the case.

So can anyone recommend a quiet 140mm fan for this?

The potential problem you are faced with is that you need not just a quiet fan but a quiet horizontally mounted fan. What i have read is that only ball bearing fans should be mounted horizontally. When it comes to ball bearing fans the only good ones i know of a are the Scythe Gentle Typhoon 800rpm and they only come in 120mm but they are also extremely quiet.

I recommend you just go with a 120mm fan. Wait for the 140mm fan market to develop.

The case is mounted on the back of a monitor using the VESA mount....so the fan will actually be vertical.

...surely a 140mm would be quieter?

I picked up a few Arctic Cooling F14 pwm fans recently. At under 1000rpm they're pretty quiet. They are also pretty reasonably priced and can be pwm controlled. They are 1300rpm fdb fans.

I've been using fdb bearings mounted horizontally for years and never had any issues.
